New state flags soon to be unfurled

June 17, 2003

Albany - You'll soon see Georgia's newest state flag flying on flagpoles around Albany. The City now has 60 new flags, which arrived about a month after Governor Perdue approved the banner.

The Parks and Recreation Department is the first city office to display the new flag. But, the City isn't throwing away the old blue flags-- rammed through the legislature by former Governor Barnes, and voted the ugliest in the union-- until citizens vote on two flag designs next March.

"We kept the old flags, and now we're collecting the blue and gold flags. It's not really a hassle, but we do have a lot of flags in storage just in case we need them," said City Materials Manager Walter Price.

The city spent $2,500 on the flags, which do not include the controversial Confederate battle emblem.
