Lowndes County - The Chief of Staff of the Air Force welcomed new officers to the military Friday. Four star general John E. Jumper commissioned five ROTC cadets as Second Lieutenants at Moody Air Force Base.
One of those was Theresa Cunningham, widow of fallen pararecueman Jason Cunningham. He was killed rescuing wounded troops in Afghanistan. This is a day Mrs. Cunningham and her husband looked forward to for years.
"I think of how many times I wanted to quit and go home, but because of support from the community, Moody, the military, and people like General Jumper, I kept going and made it to where I am today," said Cunningham.
Cunningham has been assigned to Vandenburg Air Force Base in California where she'll work as a public affairs officer.
General Jumper also presented the purple heart to Staff Sergeant Craig Fitzgerald. He was shot on a mission during Operation Enduring Freedom.
