There is usually just as much going on off the basketball court as there is on it during a conference basketball tournament.
And the city of Albany and Southern Intercollegiate Athletic conference are getting started with their preparations eigth months before the SIAC basketball tournament tips off at the Albany Civic Center.
SIAC commissioner Dr. William Lide met with city leaders this afternoon to talk about the steering committee that will be in charge of making all the arrangements.
The committee's job is to make sure all areas including security, lodging, practice facilties and receptions and the tournament banquet will all be ready to go next March.
The committee will also have to raise an estimated $40,000 to cover the costs of putting on the events the city promised when they invited the SIAC to bring the basketball tournament to town.
The SIAC has signed a one year deal with Albany but Dr. Lide believes if the planning and marketing of the tournament goes well, the conference basketball tournament could find a permanent home here.
Dr. William Lide said "Our goal is to have a place where we can stay for an indefinite period of time over the years and certainly Albany has now become the frontrunner for the longterm welfare for not only Albany for the SIAC."
Dr. Lide says besides basketball he is working to bring other spring sport events to Albany during the basketball tournament.
The 2004 SIAC basketball tournaemnt will be held March 3rd-6th at the Albany Civic Center.
