Old Fitzgerald High School will be demolished

June 11, 2003

Fitzgerald - The old Fitzgerald High School will be torn down. The Board of Education voted Tuesday night to demolish the building because of fire damage.

The more than 90-year old building burned May 14th. A 15-year-old boy is charged with torching it. A structural engineer says the walls are unstable and dangerous.

Members also voted to demolish the auditorium that was built in 1940. School officials say it's too costly to make the auditorium functional, plus the back wall is part of the old school.

The board voted to open separate demolition bids for both structures. A crew is expected to start tearing down the unsafe walls on the old school in a few weeks.
