Southland standouts staying home

June 10, 2003

Two Southland Academy standouts who have been teammates since they can remember will remain teammates in college.

Pitcher David Mixon and outfielder Matthew Greene both signed baseball scholarships to play for Georgia Southwestern.

Mixon tied the school's single season record with ten wins and struck out 104 batters in 67 plus innings.

Matthew Greene led the Raiders with eight homeruns and also had a 370 batting average.

The two friends and all-state selections are glad family and friends won't have travel very far to watch them play.

Matthew Greene said "I have watched games out there and I have seen what the program is about and they have a pretty good program out there.

David Mixon said "It is almost like a dream come true being able to go college with somebody and play baseball with team like Matthew. He is a great guy."

Southland teammate Lijah Hobgood will sign with Pensacola Junior College in the coming weeks and former Raider great Chad Spann has been named starting third baseman for the Southern division at the South Atlantic League all-star game.

Spann, an 11th round pick of the Boston Red Sox, has a .337 batting average with the Augusta GreenJackets.

The third highest average in the league at the moment.
