ALBANY, GA (WALB) – Dougherty County commissioners are working to bring a prescription drug program to the county to save you money.   The national association of counties has a program that provides discounted rates to people with little or no prescription benefit coverage.

60,000 pharmacies across the country participate in the program, including more than 30 in Dougherty County.   Commissioner John Hayes is pushing for the county to join the program.

"I think, quite frankly," said Hayes, "we have an obligation to make sure that we do everything that we can in difficult times, or not, to deliver relief to our citizens.  In other words, if we can reduce taxes, we want to do that.  If we can reduce cost of prescription drugs, as this program does, we should do that."

People who use the program save an average of 24% on their prescriptions.   The commission will vote next week on whether to join the program.
