ALBANY, GA (WALB) - A Fringe Florida pastor says he has suspended plans to burn Qurans on the anniversary of the 911 attacks.
He flew to New York hoping to meet with the Imam behind a planned Islamic Center near ground zero. An Albany Muslim leader is offering to meet with the pastor to help him understand Islam.
Imam Umar Abdal-Aquil says he has no malice toward Pastor Terry Jones, but he doesn't understand why a religious leader would want to desecrate another religion's holy book that he has never read.
The Imam says Islam is a religion of peace, acceptance, and tolerance.
"I know there is a lot of frustration and a lot of hurt," said Umar Abdal-Aquil with the Albany Mosque of Islam. "He says they prayed about it and he came up with that answer. I will ask him to read the Quran and pray on it again."
Abdal-Aquil says all people are children of God and Christianity and Islam are similar religions that should peacefully co-exist. In fact. his wife is a Christian.
He admits some Muslims commit violence and mistreat women in the name of Islam, but he says there is no defense of those actions in the Quran.
