ALBANY, GA (WALB) – Dougherty County Schools are answering First Lady Michelle Obama's call for healthier kids. Georgia's childhood obesity rate is third worst in the nation.
Dougherty County Schools and local chefs gathered at the Government Center plaza to let the community know what they're doing to create healthier meals for students.
The schools participate in the Farm to school program where they get fresh vegetables to prepare for the children. They've also made eating healthier fun for students.
"We're doing mini sliders almost like the Krystal hamburgers, kids are actually eating those, they forget to know, hey this is actually whole grain, this is whole wheat, they like the slider, they like the favor of it, they like that is looks like a Krystal's burger so, we're sneaking in the good on them," said DCSS Nutrition Director Vanessa Hayes.
The Georgia School Nutrition Association is encouraging schools to tell the community their stories.
They're also pushing for healthier school fundraisers to get away from things like selling cookie dough so the state can participate in the USDA Healthier Schools Challenge.
