UGA president won't renew Dooley's contract

June 5, 2003

(Athens-AP) -- Longtime Georgia athletic director Vince Dooley will leave the school at the end of 2004. His request to extend his contract was denied by school president Michael Adams today.

In a news conference, Adams said he will insist that Dooley stick to his current contract, an agreement reached in early 2001 with Dooley that will end Dooley's reign as athletic director next year.

Adams said Dooley could stay on for an additional year in a senior consultative capacity, with no change in salary, if he and Adams can reach a mutually acceptable plan for that work.

The president also announced the formation of a search committee for a new athletic director, with plans to fill the post by the end of this year.
