ALBANY, GA (WALB) - The Department of Transportation has big plans to improve rural roads in southwest Georgia.

Thursday evening at the Albany Mall, the DOT showed off details of the Statewide Transportation Improvement Program which has federally-funded projects over the next four years.

They include the widening of Highway 133 from Albany to Valdosta and re-surfacing roads and improving bridges in 30 southwest Georgia counties.

Gas tax revenue the DOT depends on is shrinking. The agency says a new law that allows counties to band together and pass regional sales taxes will help fund future road projects.
