THOMASVILLE, GA (WALB) –The officer now commanding the remaining troops in Iraq is a southwest Georgia native.

Newly promoted Army General Lloyd Austin is from Thomasville.

Austin spoke during a change of command ceremony Wednesday in Baghdad.

He replaces General Ray Odierno who is headed to Virginia to take over the Joint Forces Command.

Austin will be responsible for some 50-thousand American troops who remain in Iraq with a deadline for a full withdrawal by the end of next year.
