Trio of area athletes sign college scholarships

June 4, 2003

The state junior college champion Darton golf team has five players to replace.

The Cavaliers are filling those needs by signing two of South Georgia's top players.

The Cavaliers signing Michael Deariso and Jason Flowers.

Deariso was a member of the Tiftarea Academy squad that won the GISA AA state golf title and Flowers played number one for most of the season for the Colquitt County golf team.

The duo join Deerfield-Windsor's Brandon Anthony who signed with the Cavaliers last month.

All five sophomores from this year's Cavalier golf team have signed scholarships including Brent Dorner who is going to Troy State.

Dorner is the first Darton golfer to sign with a Division-I school.

In Camilla, Westwood graduate Maggie Bankston signed a basketball scholarship with Wesleyan College in Macon.

Bankston, a two year starter for the Lady Wildcats, led region her region in three point shots made and was second in the state in blocked shots.

The All-Region standout averaged just over 13 points per game her senior season at Westwood and is expected to make an immediate impact on the Pioneers program.

Maggie Bankston is the first girls basketball player from Westwood to sign a national letter of intent since former Georgia Southwestern standout Kim Cribb.
