ALBANY, GA (WALB) – Phoebe Putney hospital has a new tool to get patients to treatment faster. The Air Evac Helicopter landed at the Healthworks field around 11 Tuesday morning.
The hospital recently got the location approved with the Federal Aviation Authority as a landing zone for the helicopter. The Air Evac Flight team is based in Cordele. They serve a 70-90 mile radius and help get patients to critical care they need as soon as possible.
Program Director Greg Dampier said, "Time is our ultimate enemy in medicine. I mean, you're fighting time with strokes, MI's or heat attacks and trauma patients. Time is our enemy and this helps cut that time out."
Phoebe Emergency Center Director Todd Braswell said, "The quicker you can get a patient to definitive care, that's in the hospital, the better their chances of survival, no matter what's wrong with them."
The flight team spoke to paramedics and other medical personnel about patient loading and unloading in the new landing zone. Not only can they transport from hospital to hospital, the Air Evac team can land at the scene of accidents or fires and transport patients directly to hospitals.
