Blazers ready for tough opener

By Robert Hydrick - bio | email

VALDOSTA, GA (WALB) - For the Valdosta State football team, the start of fall camp three weeks ago was tempered by the fact the Blazers had to endure three weeks of practices in the hot August sun before they get to play a game.

David Dean said. "They have a very good blitz package from the defensive standpoint. They do a good job with their man coverage. They love to put pressure on the quarterback. They do a lot of twisting and slanting up front. Our offensive line has to be very good to pick all that up."

Kickoff is at 7:00 p.m. Saturday at Bazemore-Hyder Stadium.

Game week is finally here for the Blazers who open the season at home Saturday against Wingate.

While the Blazers will be dealing with first game jitters, the Bulldogs already have a game under their belt with a 10-7 win over West Georgia Saturday.

Saturday's game will be the first start for VSU quarterback Jimmy Coy.

Coy will face a Wingate defense that loves to put pressure on the quarterback.
