ALBANY, GA (WALB) –  A man known for his criticism of wasteful federal government spending is in Albany to endorse a Congressional candidate.

Former Texas Congressman Dick Armey is now chairman of Freedom Works, an advocacy group associated with the Tea Party movement.

He's supporting Republican Mike Keown in his campaign to unseat Second District Representative Sanford Bishop.

He said, "Our candidates have always come from the grassroots. We, in fact, take our marching orders from the local citizens because they know their community better. This is a race that I think is a bit of a stretch, but still I think he (Keown) can win. Somebody said to me you can't win that, and I said that's what they told me when I ran in '84."

Armey, who served as House Majority leader from 1995-03, met with other Freedom Works supporters at a reception Tuesday night in Albany and signed copies of his book.

He'll officially endorse Mike Keown Wednesday morning.
