ALBANY, GA (WALB) –  Several investigators testified Tuesday as the murder trial for an Alabama man got underway in Sumter County.

Johnny Ray Cochran is accused of the September 2007 shooting death of 47-year-old Melony Strickland. Her body was discovered by family members in her mobile home off Middle River Road several days after she'd been shot. Investigators say Strickland and Cochran had dated. Tuesday, court officials locked down the courtroom during testimony as a security precaution. Testimony is expected to continue most of the week.

"My investigative unit is going to testify, GBI crime scene specialists are going to testify, the forensic scientists crime lab people will be testifying. There's some other witnesses that are testifying, some are going to be transported from out of state," said Sumter County Sheriff Pete Smith.

Cochran was arrested in Alabama and fought extradition to Georgia for six months.
