DOUGLAS, GA (WALB) –A small plane crashed just after take off from the Coffee County airport this afternoon.The plane went down shortly before 1:30pm in some woods near Willacoochee highway.
According to a spokesperson from the FAA,The pilot was practicing touch and go's when he crashed at the end of the south runway.
He was the only person on board and bystanders helped pull him out of the wreckage. He was taken to Coffee Regional Hospital and later taken to a trauma center in Savannah. The FAA says his injuries appear to be non life threatening.
"It appears it had some mechanical problems and had been worked on by the pilot and then took back off and some of the bystanders heard some traffic plane looked like it was in distress and heard the crash," said Chief Scott Merritt, Coffee Co. Fire Rescue.
Authorities have not yet released the name of the pilot but the plane was registered to Thomas Newman of Florida.
