ALBANY, GA (WALB) –Police in Cordele are investigating a shocking weekend burglary.  The burglar viciously stabbed a pet poodle to death with a pair of scissors.

The family and friends of Michael Shirah say they are grieving along with him, after someone killed his beloved dog. The poodle was brutally stabbed at least four times with a pair of scissors, and they say they are scared because the dog's killer is still on the loose.

Family and friends say Sheila was not just another pet to Michael Shirah, or them.

Michael's mother Wanda Shirah said "Sheila was my grand dog, and has been for 9 years."

Saturday morning Michael was out of town, and Wanda went to check Sheila at his apartment, and found the door open. She found the apartment ransacked, blood spattered in every room. Then she found Sheila inside a clothes basket in the bathroom. Shirah said "My vet told me she knew that she was stabbed four times, and deep stabs."

Friend Trina Whitman said "The way that Sheila was killed, it was brutal. It was vicious."

An air conditioner, TV, Wii game, money and jewelry were stolen. But none of that mattered. It was the senseless killing of Sheila that has family and friends working together.

Shirah said "I don't know why anybody would want to hurt that little dog. She was so little and so tiny. She wouldn't hurt a flea. She was just. They shouldn't done that."

Now these family and friends say they want justice for Sheila, and are asking for help catching this burglar and animal killer.

Trina Whitman said "Hopefully there is somebody out there that saw something that will come forward, and just have some compassion for the family. It's not just Michael they hurt, it's the entire family."

Michael Shirah said he could not talk with us, too overcome with grief that his constant companion for the last ten years was killed, so his family and friends are working with him to get justice for Sheila.

Shirah found Sheila stabbed about 8:30 AM Saturday, and the dog died about 8 that night. The family says that anyone who would brutally kill a little dog is dangerous, and they say they worry with a person like that still at large.

Cordele Police are investigating the burglary and Sheila's death.  If you have any information, call them at 276-2921.
