Tigers claw back

May 31, 2003

(Auburn-AP) -- Scott Schade hit a grand slam and Karl Amonite had a two-run homer as Auburn routed Clemson 15 to nothing today in the NCAA tournament in Auburn.

The host Tigers, the Number 4 national seed, led 11-nothing after five innings, including a four-run fourth. Auburn, 42 and 20 for the season, must beat Ohio State twice tomorrow to advance to a super regional in Auburn.

Clemson, with 39 wins and 22 losses, had its string of 17 40 win seasons snapped with easily its worst loss of the season, going 1 and 4 in the postseason. Colby Paxton pitched his first complete game of the season and Auburn's third in an NCAA regional, the first since 1997. He allowed five hits, struck out six and didn't let any baserunners past second base.

Clemson starter Aaron Trolia allowed six runs, five earned, in two-and-a-third innings. Two relievers didn't fare much better.
