Teens sentenced for attacking classmate with pliers

May 30, 2003

(Milledgeville-AP) -- Three teenagers were sentenced to at least 45 days in a youth detention center for attacking a classmate at school with a pair of pliers.

The teens were found guilty of holding down another student in a driver's education class at Wilkinson County High School last month and squeezing one of his testicles with the pliers.

Ocmulgee Juvenile Court Judge Phil Spivey also sentenced them to a year on probation and 80 hours of community service. They will be required to write letters of apology and stay away from the victim.

A fourth defendant, 17-year-old Jerrill Strickland, will be prosecuted as an adult in Superior Court. District Attorney Fred Bright says Strickland is looking at a stiffer punishment because he's older and he is the one who allegedly assaulted the victim with the pliers.

Bright says the attack happened during class, but the teacher was not present.
