Shoppers are ready for the new Publix

By Christian Jennings - bio | email

ALBANY,  GA (WALB) –  Hundreds of people lined up outside the new Publix supermarket in Lee County Wednesday morning, waiting for the doors to open.

Once inside, they were greeted with a free bag and LOTS of free food they couldn't turn down!

Typically it's the kind of line you'd see waiting to get into a concert. But Pete Barnes thought the excitement of the new Publix was well worth the hot and humid wait of about... "It's fun getting up early, something new in town."

Once shoppers grabbed their buggies it was all about the food, and not just the kind you buy.

Everywhere you looked there were free samples. "You can have breakfast, coffee, desert, everything," said Tish Brittingham.

"I'm waiting in line for meat. I hit up a lot of sweets first but I'm going for the meat now," said Jacques Williams.

"It's the most exciting thing to happen in Lee county since we've live here," said Brittingham.

Of course one of the biggest crowd pleasers was green and not even edible. "The free bags, we came for the bags," said Erin McDonald.

And happy customers were enough to make Manager Garrett Tukes a happy man. "It's a joy to be able to see people smile, this is their store," he said.

"I'm loving it, this is my store, I used to have to drive to the other side of town," said Williams.

Now her drive time is cut in half.

And from the looks of things, Lee Countians are pretty excited about being able to check off their grocery lists and nibble on a snack or two a little closer to home.

The Publix will open at 7:00AM Thursday, and closes at 10:00PM.
