Drug program creating unexpected results

May 29, 2003

Albany-- A year-old drug program at the Dougherty County jail is getting some unexpected results.

Corporal Thomas Kendricks runs the substance abuse program out of this room at the jail. So far 218 inmates have completed the program--of that number only 18 have returned to jail after their release.

Corporal Kendricks says the low recidivism rate is only one benefit, "As a matter of fact I get phone calls from people thanking me for putting them into the program. I get letters saying you really helped me out, I really feel we are doing a positive part."

The program is paid for with fines collected from people found guilty of drug-related crimes.
