ALBANY, GA (WALB) –  Albany city commissioners held a moment of silence today for the late Gil Barrett.

At the end of today's meeting, Mayor Willie Adams asked commissioners to remember Barrett, who died Sunday.

Adams said Barrett was a champion for Albany and Dougherty County and he won't soon be forgotten.

"if I had to guess, Gil is up in Heaven, and he's smiling at us and wishing us the best of success in this community."

Barrett was elected to the Dougherty County Commission in 1958 and served for 40 years, 20 of them as chairman.
