ALBANY, GA (WALB) –  A former commissioner who served alongside longtime Dougherty commission chairman Gil Barrett says the county has lost a good friend and a better leader..

George Brown spent more than 20 years on the Dougherty County Commission and during that time he said Barrett put his 40 years of experience as county commissioner to good use.

Brown said Barrett always kept the concerns of his constituents and fellow commissioners in mind when making decisions.

"I was certainly very sad to hear about his passing. And I certainly got to know him very well in the more than 20 years that I served with him. I cannot think of a single instance when Mr. Barrett supported a proposal or put forth a proposal that did not have the best interest of Dougherty County at heart," said Brown.

Gil Barrett died Sunday at his home. He was 87.
