ALBANY, GA (WALB) –  A Mitchell County woman says she is sure she was being targeted by a scam artist, who is preying on senior citizens over the telephone. Now she wants to warn other South Georgians about this con, trying to steal your financial information.

78-year-old Ruby Israel had heart surgery just a couple of weeks ago, but she still knew something was wrong when a man called on the telephone about her health insurance.

"He just said 'you are supposed to get a new medical health card,'" Israel said.

Israel said the man told her name, address, and telephone number, but then asked for more.  "He said I need you to get your check book and give me the number off the bottom left corner of the checkbook."

Israel said she knew immediately it was a scam, and she was upset. "Excuse me, but I said I don't give that to a damned soul.' And I hung up the phone."

Israel knew exactly how to handle the scam artist, but she worries that other senior citizens might fall for the identity theft. "Somebody might be waiting to get a card, and they'll bit it, and then be ruined."

Ruby Israel said she wants to remind South Georgians to be very careful about giving any personal or financial information over the, because it could cost a person on fixed income everything.

The Federal Trade Commission estimates that as many as nine million Americans have their identities stolen each year.
