AMERICUS, GA (WALB) – It's been more than 3 years since a devastating tornado struck Americus. While miraculously very few people were injured or killed in the twister one victim was the hospital.

Now, a new hospital is being built to replace the one that was so badly damaged. Over the last few weeks nurses who worked at the old hospital have been touring the site of the new building.

Even though it's been more than 3 years, some of those nurses remember the night of March 1st, 2007 very well.

Wendy Crimmins is one of those nurses.  She said, "everybody was complaining that their ears were popping at that time, and at the same time all the windows started blowing out and things started flying off the roof and the roof was gone in certain places."

Some of the facilities at the new Phoebe Sumter - like the women's clinic - will open this Fall, while the hospital itself will open in late 2011.
