Regional transportation plan in the spotlight

ALBANY, GA (WALB) – Lee County commissioners learned more about a regional transportation plan that you'll decide whether to pay for.

A new state law allows voters in regions to approve an extra penny sales tax for projects in their region.

Tuesday night, a regional transportation representative told Lee County leaders how it would work.

County commission chairmen and one mayor from each of the 14 counties in our region would make up a committee that pick projects to get a share of $500 million the tax could generate over 10-years.

"I've been through some things like this before and I think our local area will support each other for local projects. Generally, if everybody's got something in it, everybody's going to support everyone else," said SWGA Regional Commission Director Dan Bollinger.

Leaders expect the regional sales tax referendum to be on the ballot in 2012.
