VALDOSTA, GA (WALB) - Valdosta State football team held their first practice of the season Monday today.
Head coach David Dean and his staff working out half the team in the morning and the other half in the afternoon for the first week.
While all eyes are on the quarterback battle, the Blazers coaching staff will also work on finding starters on the defensive line and in the secondary. Four junior college transfers arrived in mid-year and are all battling for starting spots. As for the quarterback battle, coach Dean is looking for consistency between Russ Callaway and Jimmy Coy.
David Dean said. "That is not what happened in the spring. They both kind of stayed right there even with each other. They had a lot of inconsistencies although they got better they had some inconsistent days. I just want to see the consistency out of that position."
Russ Callaway said. "You can come out here and look great one day and you still know it. But the next day you can miss some throws and you are not quite as good. It is really important to be consistent."
Valdosta State opens the season September 4th against Wingate.
