LEESBURG, GA (WALB) - A day after former Lee County Commissioner Walter Phelps died, current Lee County Commission Chairman Ed Duffy spoke to us about the businessman he's known for more than 30 years.

Duffy says Phelps was his commissioner before he even ran for for office, and he was always concerned with the success of Lee County.

"Walter was one of the kindest persons I've ever met in my life," said Duffy. "If he could help you, he would help you. He would do anything for anybody. I've lost a great friend. It's a tragedy."

Duffy says he recalls numerous times when he and Phelps would discuss Lee County at his store, P&P Garden and Hardware Center, on North Slappey Boulevard.

He says Phelps, who always offered his support, will be terribly missed.
