ALBANY, GA (WALB) –   Albany NAACP leaders honored the 45th Anniversary of the signing of the Voting Rights Act Friday.

Local chapter President William Wright spoke to a small crowd at the Government Center. He said the 1965 Voting Rights Act, signed on this date by President Lyndon Johnson,  made it possible for thousands of black Americans to hold elected office today.

He challenged local black leaders to push for more racial equality.

"There should be some difference between the politics of an all white regime and that of a majority black system. And that is a question for us."

The NAACP Called the Voting Rights Act "one of America's most important laws, that has completely changed the fundamentals of who can be elected in the USA."
