ALBANY, GA (WALB) - The Albany State Rams held their first practice of the season Thursday morning.

The team will work out in shorts for two days and shoulder pads for two more before putting on full pads next week.

The big battle in camp will be at quarterback only senior Wayne Campbell will have different competition for the starting job.

Head coach Mike White says Rodney Catlin is academically ineligible for this season.

But the coaching staff believes Chris Payne from College Park and Stanley Jennings will challenge for the job.

The coaching staff believes a strong ground game from the Rams stable of running backs will help whoever wins the quarterback position settle in to the job.

Kareem Hess said. "We have only got one quarterback that knows the system and that is Wayne. We are real excited about getting back out here. Learning how to run the ball more. That is what coach wants us to do. Run the ball more and have more rushing yards."

Albany State opens the season August 28th at Kentucky State.
