ALBANY, GA (WALB) – You'll get a chance to decide whether to implement a new tax to pay for major transportation projects that could improve the economy of Southwest Georgia.

A new state law allows regional voters to decide if they want to pay an extra penny in sales tax for ten years to fund transportation projects in their region.    One project that could benefit Dougherty, Colquitt, and other South Georgia counties is the widening of highway 133.

Dougherty County Chairman Jeff Sinyard said, "The process is beginning to unfold very strongly at this point.  I think in the next three to four weeks, we'll know specifically what the process does include and where we need to put our strengths and thoughts on this."

Leaders expect that regional sales tax to be on the ballot in 2012.
