ALBANY, GA (WALB) –   An Albany man is in jail after he opened fire on teens he thought were burglars.

A 15-year-old girl was shot in the thumb.

Burglaries, robberies, and violent crimes are a huge crime issue in Albany, and many people have bought guns to protect themselves.

Friends of the man who fired the shots say he did the right thing, but investigators say he may have gone too far. So Cecil Tyson's arrest has many South Georgians asking, when is it OK to shoot?

Willie Clark repairs the door jam at his home on Alice Avenue, where it was smashed late last night when someone kicked it in. Clark rents the home to 58-year-old Cecil Tyson, who is in jail for reckless conduct, after Police say he fired several shots at the home invaders.

Clark says Tyson was asleep on that couch a little after 11, when the front door was kicked in. The window beside the couch is still smashed, where someone tried to break in it earlier this week. Police say Tyson fired several shots with a rifle.

15-year-old Yasmine Walker was hit in the thumb on her left hand. She told Police she was walking down the street when she heard shots, and ran, and noticed later she was hit.

Detectives initially told us that Walker and two other teens were trying to burglarize the home. Late this afternoon, Albany Police said Yasmine Walker is not a burglary suspect.

Police say two 16 year old girls who were picked up at the same time are burglary suspects.

The man who fired the shot is charged with reckless conduct and is being held on $1,500 bond. ©2010 WALB News. All rights reserved.   Feedback
