Cook County, GA (WALB) – A 13-year-old boy was shot and killed by his 14-year old brother inside their home on Hemp Spring Circle yesterday afternoon. The boys apparently were playing with a gun while their father was not home, but investigators are still trying to figure out exactly what happened.
"It's certainly a tragedy for that family at the very best there's nothing good about this. It's something I can't even imagine." said Cook County Sheriff John Daughtrey.
Authorities refused to give us the names of the teens. "It's our understanding that they removed the guns from the safe while the father was gone to a doctor's appointment," said Daughtrey.
The nine millimeter gun was loaded when the boys pulled it out of the safe. The boy called his father and told him his brother had been shot, but he wasn't sure if he was dead or not. His dad told him to call 911.
The boy was shot in the face and his brother tried giving him CPR to bring him back to life. A neighbor also rushed to the mobile home.
When authorities got there they found the teen lying on floor next to the love seat in the living room. "This should serve as warning to people who have both guns and children in their home," said Daughtrey.
"I highly suggest to someone that has firearms in the house to have gunlocks on them if they have children," said Ed Mullinax of Valdosta Guns and Pawn.
The GBI told us the teen has been charged with misdemeanor involuntary manslaughter. The Sheriff tells us the father has raised the boys on his own since their mother died several years ago.
