ALBANY, GA (WALB) – Studies have long shown the benefits of breast milk. Now, Phoebe Putney hospital is passing along that message to people who work with new moms.
More than 60 health care workers are taking part in a week-long training course on the benefits of breastfeeding and how to encourage mothers to breastfeed their children.
The certified lactation counselor conference is sponsored by the Children's Miracle Network. Teresa Darity is a Mother/baby nurse at Phoebe. She's also the mother of a two-month old boy who she is nursing.
She said, "Breastfeeding is not just about wanting your baby close to you, but it's also about their health and also about them having a better start in life."
RN/Lactation Consultant Debra Knight said, "That's why we have breasts. That's what we're intended to do with them is breastfeed our babies and the babies are healthier, mommas are healthier. Babies have less illness."
RN/Lactation Consultant Dr. Karin Cadwell said, "When we look at the most fragile and most vulnerable babies, that's where it's clearest that breastmilk makes the biggest difference."
The participants will take a test Friday to receive their certification.
