Experts stress safety when diving

ALBANY, GA (WALB) –After two drownings on south Georgia rivers in recent days, diving experts urge you to use caution in rivers and springs.

An autopsy reveals 34-year old Brian Smith drowned Saturday on the Flint in Baker County.

He was an avid snorkeler.

Experts say if you're out on the river make sure you pay attention to rocks and the current because it could become swift.

Also make sure you are in good physical health.

Before you go diving, meticulously check all your equipment and put out a dive flag so oncoming boats will see you.

"It's easy to keep up with just one buddy when you have four or more people its kind of hard to keep up with but you always dive with a buddy," said Steve Lunsford, Dive Instructor.

Some dive shops in Albany refuse to sell equipment to divers who are not certified.
