Albany recognizes Disabilities act

By Dawn Hobby - bio | email

ALBANY, GA (WALB) – Twenty years ago today, the Americans with Disabilities Act was signed into law to prohibit discrimination against people with disabilities.

Several beneficiaries of the law flanked Commissioner Christopher Pike when he signed a proclamation recognizing the anniversary.

City leaders say this is an opportunity to encourage all citizens to work together in promoting equality and self-sufficiency for those with disabilities.

The Disabilities Act applies to employment, transportation, public accommodations, and telecommunications.

In December 1987, Albany City Commissioners established a Barrier Free Design Board to assist citizens with disabilities.
