Albany - Albany Police Officers will now have to work a little harder to move up in rank. But, the pay will be better.

On Tuesday, city commissioners tentatively agreed to make the rank of Corporal more competitive. Previously, to earn the rank of Corporal, patrol officers were automatically promoted after three years on the beat.

That was reduced to two years if the officer held a college degree. Now, the promotion will be based on experience, performance, and a written exam.

"The Officers came to me with a request to make the rank of Corporal more competitive," said Chief Bobby Johnson. "I'm always excited about anything that will improve the moral of the Department."

Achieving the rank of Corporal will also earn the officer a pay raise.
