Cowart wins coach of the year honors

It is award time in the GISA where Deerfield-Windsor coach Brad Cowart is named the AAA coach of the year after leading the Knights to their first state title since 1998.

The Knights also had three players to make the all-state team.

 Pitcher/outfielder Joey Carroll, catcher/third baseman Chris Harris and shortstop/pitcher Lance Walker.

All three of those players were also all-region performers along with Wayne Riles, Brandon Ross, Grant Walker and Josh Carswell.

 The team Deerfield-Windsor beat in the state finals, Southland Academy had four players to make the all-state team.

They are centerfielder Matthew Greene, pitcher David Mixon, third baseman/pitcher Justin Hildreth and first baseman Lijah Hobgood. Brookwood's Rob Kellogg is the coach of the year in AA and four members of his state championship team made all state honors in that classification.

They are juniors Seth Tucker, Steven Shea, Steven Cheney and sophomore Drew Johnson.

Tiftarea's Blake Phillips, Kurt Rodgers and Taylor Hammond are also earned all-state honors as did Terrell Academy's Brandon Ivey and and Ben Braxton of Fullington.
