Albany's unemployment climbs again

ALBANY, GA (WALB) –  Georgia lost the second highest number of jobs in the country last month, and Albany's jobless rate spiked to 11-percent.

At the Goodwill Career Center in Albany, job hunters told us searching for work is tough. Of the state's 14 metro areas, only Dalton has a higher unemployment rate than Albany. David Parker lost his job as a machine operator more than two and a half months ago. Just last week, he was offered a restaurant job and took it to help him get by.

"I was willing to take whatever. Like I say, I'm still looking for better opportunities, but I'm just thankful to have a job, any kind of job right now," said David Parker, newly employed.

Parker has had a few interviews, but the competition is tough.  There were a lot of applicants for those jobs.  Payroll jobs in Georgia dropped by 9,400 in June.  Labor Commissioner Michael Thurmond says the losses suggest the small economic recovery may be losing steam.
