ALBANY, GA (WALB) –Because of Albany's high poverty rate, a national service program in sending volunteers here to help service organizations fight poverty.

The AmeriCorps Vista program assigned three volunteers for one year of service.

Six more volunteers will be added later this year.

The first three will work with the Anchorage, Network of Trust, and Strive to Thrive.

The volunteers can help with fundraising, grant writing, and marketing.

The director of The Anchorage, Kenny Phillips, said "we'll probably have him doing some clerical and helping with grants as well."

United Way will assign the Americorps Vista volunteers to non-profits that can best use them in their fight against poverty.
