Blakely, GA (WALB) – Investigators are still looking for a motive in a weekend double murder suicide in Blakely.
In a back bedroom of their home, 37-year-old Matt Justice shot his wife, his son, his daughter and then himself Friday night. Fourteen year old Garrett Justice, his mother Amy and his father, Matt are all dead.
The only survivor is 11-year-old Emily Justice who was shot in the arm as she ran from her father. The question on so many minds, is why?
At the Early County Schools, band members returned to band camp without Garrett Justice. The school had crisis counselors there for students.
"That's going to have to be something the whole band has to come together and deal with and figure out how to move forward," said Early County Schools Interim Superintendent Bronwyn Ragan-Martin.
With shock wearing off it's something the entire community is trying to understand. Jay Winkler grew up with Matt Justice and talked to him Friday about football drills scheduled for Monday evening.
"He seemed to be in good spirits, we cut, and fooled, and played around, and laughed a little bit and whenever we left the last thing was that he was going to be at practice today and possibly at the physicals on Thursday," said family friend Jay Winkler.
Matt Justice taught science at the Middle School while his wife Amy taught language arts to gifted students at the elementary school. School officials say they know the first day of classes will be difficult this year.
"We'll be working with our administrators in the next few days to see what type of support they would like to have set up at the schools when we start back in the next couple of weeks for both students and teachers," said Ragan-Martin.
Friends say recently Matt Justice hadn't been at football drills because of other work, he still planned to be involved this season.
"He said he hadn't been there because he was trying to do a grass cutting business, which was no problem," said Winkler.
While the community and the family's church continue to struggle to understand why this has happened officials say Emily is out of the hospital and has been surrounded by friends and family.
The GBI hopes she can shed some light as to why this shooting occurred, but say they're not rushing her, after all that she's been though.
The funeral for the Justice family is Wednesday at 2:00 PM at the Blakely First United Methodist Church.
