ALBANY, GA (WALB) – A south Georgia contractor accuses Dougherty County commissioners of breaking the law in awarding a construction contract.
Earlier this month, the commission agreed to hire LRA contractors to build a new Headquarters for the public works department even though JCI General Contractors of Moultrie was the lowest bidder. Because the bids were less than $2,000 apart, the county decided to go with LRA since they're based in Albany.
JCI's attorney sent commissioners a letter claiming they violated the law and asking them to reconsider their decision. Commissioner Lamar Hudgins said, "We felt like it was in the best interest to go with the local contractor, like .27 of 1% was the amount, so that's what the county voted to do."
Commissioners plan to revisit the issue next Monday.
