(Jefferson-AP) -- Wheeler won the Class Five-A boys state track and field championship with scant contribution from nationally ranked sprinter Reggie Witherspoon, but not without last-race controversy.
Stephenson appeared to overtake Douglass and Wheeler in the four-by-400 relay, the day's last event, with anchor runner Michael Grant winning easily. But Stephenson was disqualified because track judges ruled that Grant cut off a runner from Douglass on the back straight.
Grant won both the 100 and the 200 for Stephenson and was the high-point winner. Grant received the Morris Bryan outstanding performer award, too.
Wheeler finished second in the relay, earning 56 points. Stephenson finished second with 47. Class A was decided in the final event as well, with Jenkins County ending Landmark Christian's seven-year run as state champions.
In Triple-A, Carrollton figuratively lapped the field, scoring more points than the next three teams combined. Cedar Shoals defended its Quad-A title, and Americus won comfortably in Double-A.
