ALBANY, GA (WALB) - Albany firefighters battled a blaze near downtown Albany Saturday evening.

Firefighters say the roof of an abandoned apartment building in the 800 block of North Monroe was smoking when they arrived. The fire was on the floor level and then spread to the unit next door.

People who live nearby say they see vagrants going in and out of the building. The cause remains under investigation.

Officials say the building was empty. If you see people going in out of abandoned buildings, you should call code enforcement at 3-1-1 to report it.
