HARTSFIELD, GA (WALB) - South Georgia is known for its high school football.

The South Georgia Youth Shooting Club in Colquitt County is heading to the National Junior Olympic Shooting Championships in Colorado Springs, Colorado.

The National Youth Junior Olympic Shooting Championships start Saturday and run through Thursday.

The competition will feature 120 of the top shooters in the nation. "We had one recently got an invitation to join the Army Marksmanship Unit which is an elite group of athletes in the United State. We have had another young man on the Junior National team. They have done quite well. I am looking forward to putting more of these youngsters on that team," Mike Simpson said.

The South Georgia Youth Shooting Club has qualified one its largest teams for the national meet with 20 of its members getting a chance to shoot for national titles.

Another milestone for coach Mike Simpson who has built this team and facility over the last ten years.

Simpson says the rest of the nation is learning about the talented shooters in south Georgia.

The area is also gaining a reputation as the home of outstanding youth shooters.
