ALBANY, GA (WALB) – A south Georgia Republican gubernatorial candidate is making his way around the region just days before the primary election.

Former State Senator Eric Johnson says one of the hot bed issues in southwest Georgia continues to be water. He says the region needs a leader who will look out for the water needs of those below the gnat line and not just focus on metro Atlanta.

"As redistricting moves more and more power to Atlanta - having a governor from the other part of Georgia who understands a job in Albany is just as important as a job more in Atlanta and that water needs of agribusiness in south Georgia are just as important in Atlanta - it's critical to folks in the other part of Georgia," said Johnson

Recent polls show Johnson trailing GOP candidates John Oxendine and Karen Handel, but neck and neck with former U.S. Congressman Nathan Deal.

Johnson says he expects to see a runoff.

Johnson's next stop will be in Sylvester for a meet and greet Thursday at the Worth County Chamber of Commerce. That event kicks off at 7:45 a.m.
