ALBANY, GA (WALB) - Albany race car driver Skip Nichols chose family over a professional stock car racing career 40 years ago.
This weekend, Skip Nichols will be driving for a first place prize of $30,000.
It is part of the Legends Million Race at the Charlotte Motor Speedway where the one million purse has attracted Legends car drivers from 38 states and two foreign countries. Nichols, who two weeks ago became the winningest Legends Car driver in the Atlanta Motor Speedway's Thursday Thunder series, says he has never raced for that much cash in his career. Competing in the Masters division this weekend, Nichols wants to win but says he is looking forward to having fun and seeing friends he raced against some 30 years ago.
Skip Nichols said. "We will just let the chips fall where they may. I hope to be in the top three, four or five at the end of the night. If we can load it up on the trailer, nobody gets hurt and everybody can leave as friends, then that is great accomplishment for me." Qualifying starts Thursday, the heats are Friday and the big final races are Saturday at the Charlotte Motor Speedway.
