Pine Beetle damage leave us alone for now

By Karen Cohilas - bio | email

ALBANY, GA (WALB) –  Pine Beetles do big damage to one of Georgia's biggest crops-- pine trees. Fortunately, that shouldn't be a major problem this year.

A recent aerial survey in South Georgia turned up no Southern Pine Beetle damage. That's good news for those who grow pine trees because the beetles can do millions of dollars in damage when they invade an area.

"They do a whole lot of damage in a short period of time," said Forest Health Specialist Mark McClure.  "I'm very glad we didn't see them this year, that's right."

The last major outbreak in Central Georgia in 2007 did $14 Million in damage. Another outbreak in North Georgia in 2001 caused a staggering loss of $72 Million.
