Accused shooter charged with double homicide

May 15, 2003

Morgan-- Lenward Brown, the accused shooter in Wednesday morning's double murder in Leary, is now charged with the killings.

The 50-year-old Brown was booked this morning on two counts murder, one count of aggravated assault, and one count aggravated assault against a peace officer.

Brown is accused of killing his ex-girlfriend, Daphne Carter, and her father, James Carter, inside their Leary home.

Calhoun County Sheriff Jimmie Camp says the small town of Leary, with just over 600 residents, is shaken by the tragic crime, "It's extremely bad on a small place because everyone knows one another. Kinfolks live next to the victims. We see the same thing the larger area does, just not as much of it maybe."

27-year-old Daphne Carter was the mother of two children. Brown is the father of the youngest child. Family members say Brown was distraught over a recent breakup with Daphne.

Sheriff Camp says Brown told him he was having problems with the relationship.
